The Guided Reading Kidstation Model: Making Instruction Meaningful for the Whole Class
Guastello, E. Francine; Lenz, Claire R.
International Reading Association (NJ3)
This book will help teachers address how to manage guided reading groups with the Guided Reading Kidstation Model, a model that focuses on meeting students' diverse needs and ensuring student accountability. Activities within the model are based on the Standards for the English Language Arts and are appropriate for use with the variety of students teachers have in their classroom, from struggling readers to English-language learners. To help teachers use the model right away, chapters focus on how to conduct the guided reading lesson; how to form flexible groups; how to implement the model in the classroom; and how to adapt basal readers, leveled readers, trade books, and content area textbooks to the model. The appendixes offer a wealth of resources related to the model, from literacy profiles and reading and learning inventories to sample planning sheets and reproducible forms. After a Preface, this book is organized into the following chapters: (1) Evolution of the Kidstation Model; (2) The "Guided" Exchange: Making Informed Decisions about Creating and Managing Flexible Groups; (3) Guided Reading and the Creation of Kidstations; (4) Implementing the Kidstation Model; (5) Adapting Basal Readers, Leveled Readers, Trade Books, and Content Area Textbooks to the Kidstation Model; and (6) The Kidstation Model: Q & A. The following are appended: (1) Literacy Profiles; (2) Guided Reading Checklists; (3) Student Inventories; (4) Planning Sheets; (5) Directions and Reproducibles for Kidstation; (6) Evaluations; and (7) Additional Resources. An Index is included.
