Musicals Enrich Middle School Programs
Thomas, Douglas D.; North, Rita
National Middle School Association (NJ3), Middle Ground, v3 n3 p43-44 Feb 2005
An enriching fine arts program has long been advocated as an essential element of an effective middle school program. The vocal music program at Pleasant Hill (Missouri) Middle School supports student growth and development beyond the regular classroom. It supports students' existing skills and talents and provides opportunities for them to develop new competencies and interests. Not only do students improve their vocal music skills in this program, but they also develop their movement, public speaking, and acting skills; learn organization, teamwork, and cooperation skills; and become familiar with such areas as costuming, lighting, and set construction. The school's musical productions, such as "Oklahoma" "Annie," and "The Music Man," created opportunities for cross-curricular instruction, provided vivid images for teachers to support classroom discussions, and created a wonderful avenue for parental support, community involvement, improved self-esteem, and a positive school climate. The success of the musical program at Pleasant Hill Middle School are attributed to such key components as: high expectations for students, parental empowerment, wide-scale participation, selective programs, and multilevel support.
