Teacher-Pupil Planning: Democracy in the Classroom
Grobe, William J.
National Middle School Association (NJ3), Middle Ground v9 n1 p23-24 Aug 2005
In this article, the author discusses seven characteristics of classrooms that encourage maximum student participation in the education process: (1) democracy; (2) scientific method; (3) creativity; (4) change; (5) individualization; (6) socialization; and (7) problem solving. Using these concepts to make students part of the instructional planning process can help teachers develop students' higher order and critical thinking skills, rather than simply addressing core content and standards in preparation for high-stakes tests.
