Our Model for Effective Governance
Bowen, Roger W.; Cotter, William R.
Association of Governing Boards of Universities and Colleges, Trusteeship v13 n5 Sep-Oct 2005
Governing boards have the authority to make many decisions for colleges and universities, but authority itself is built on trust and respect, and those two attributes can be established only over time and through human interaction. In this article, the authors describe shared governance at Colby College, and how it has helped to promote mutual trust and respect between trustees and faculty members despite differing perspectives and the fact that some trustees and administrators might view faculty participation as a challenge to their authority.
