Able to Play: Mobilizing Communities for Children of All Abilities - Framing the Issue. Seminar Series
W. K. Kellogg Foundation
"Able to Play: Mobilizing Communities for Children of All Abilities" is one of a series of six seminars that the W.K. Kellogg Foundation hosted during 2005 to celebrate its 75th Anniversary year. The seminar, held in Lansing, Michigan, June 8-10, shared the lessons learned from the Able to Play Project. Advocates for people with disabilities, policymakers, and state and national leaders discussed the importance of universal accessibility, explored the role in play in learning and healthy development, and demonstrated how communities can mobilize to achieve their goals. The first day of the seminar focused on providing opportunities for children of all abilities to play and learn together. It includes a site visit to a nearby Able to Play project at a local elementary school. The day also included a panel moderated by John Hockenberry, a celebrated NPR, NBC, and ABC journalist, and advocate for people with disabilities, who guided the conversation around the issue of the importance of play in children's lives and the implications of such opportunities as children of all abilities develop together. The second day of the seminar included a morning workshop led by a national expert, providing a framework for participants to become leaders and catalysts for change. Following the workshop, five breakout panels provided technical assistance focused on community mobilization. This document divides into seven sections: (1) A Call to Action: Equality on the Playground; (2) An Agenda for Change: Rallying Communities Around Equal Pay; (3) The Issue: Children with Disabilities are Excluded from Play; (4) The Opportunity: Mobilizing Communities to Expand Play Opportunities for Children of All Abilities; (5) Promising Approaches: Barrier-Free Play Environments Planned Around Children's Predictable Play Behaviors Result in Substantive Improvement in Children's Development; (6) The W.K. Kellogg Foundation Commitment: After Able to Play; and (7) Expected Seminar Outcomes: Growing the Seeds of Able to Play.
