Research for Action
Kensington High School is a neighborhood school located in the Kensington area of Philadelphia. After a successful campaign led by Youth United for Change, Kensington High School was broken up into three small schools, with a fourth to be built. Youth researchers explored the relationships between adults and students in all three of the new small schools. Some students experienced a lack of respect from their teachers while also acknowledging that some students were not always acting like young adults. The youth researchers learned research methods in a research camp sponsored by Research for Action and then conducted interviews, informal conversations, and observations. The intent of their research was to (1) improve teaching and learning in their small schools; (2) see how small schools were doing at Kensington; (3) banish their school's negative reputation; (4) improve student-teacher relationships; (5) address equity in education in all schools; and (6) allow students' wishes to be heard. This report presents the youth researchers' findings and their recommendations to district and school leaders, students, and community groups.
