Schools as Caring, Learning Communities. A Center Practice Brief
Center for Mental Health in Schools at UCLA
Learning is neither limited to what is formally taught nor to time spent in classrooms. It occurs whenever and wherever the learner interacts with the surrounding environment. All facets of the community (not just the school) provide learning opportunities--thus the term learning community. This brief provides in-depth answers to the following questions: (1) What do we mean by caring, learning community? (2) Why should a school be the hub of a community and a classroom be a student's home away from home? (3) What is a psychological sense of community? and (4) What's involved in working together? The brief concludes with a list of a related Center resources and a list of related references. Appended is: Classroom Climate.
