Delivering Online Examinations: A Case Study
Howarth, Jason; Messing, John; Altas, Irfan
Online Submission, Turkish Online Journal of Distance Education--TOJDE v5 n3 Jul 2004
This paper represents a brief case study of delivering online examinations to a worldwide audience. These examinations are delivered in partnership with a commercial online testing company as part of the Industry Master's degree at Charles Sturt University (CSU). The Industry Master's degree is an academic program for students currently employed in the IT industry. Using Internet Based Testing (IBT), these students are examined in test centres throughout the world. This offers many benefits. For example, students have the freedom of sitting exams at any time during a designated interval. Computer-based testing also provides instructors with valuable feedback through test statistics and student comments. In this paper, we document CSU's use of the IBT system, including how tests are built and delivered, and how both human and statistical feedback is used to evaluate and enhance the testing process.
