Turning on Learning: Five Approaches for Multicultural Teaching Plans for Race, Class, Gender and Disability, 4th Edition
Grant, Carl A.; Sleeter, Christine E.
Jossey-Bass, An Imprint of Wiley
This Fourth Edition contains many lesson plans that cover a variety of subject areas and grade levels (1-12), as well as action research activities that investigate the various dimensions of teaching. Many of the lesson plans are written by actual classroom teachers, and all of them have been examined by practicing teachers. More than simply a "how-to" manual, it is designed to help the teacher or teacher education student teach from a multicultural perspective. Each lesson plan offers a "Before" version (the lesson as it is usually taught) and an "After" version (how the lesson can be improved to "turn on" learning). A discussion explaining why the changes were made follows each lesson plan. The contents of this book include: (1) What Turns Your Students On?; (2) Teaching the Exceptional and Culturally Different; (3) Human Relations; (4) Single-Group Studies; (5) Multicultural Education; and (6) Education that is Multicultural and Social Reconstructionist. The document concludes with a Subject Index and Lesson Plan Index.
