An Intervention Model for the Implementation of Evidence-Based Children's Mental Health Treatments. Data Trends #128
Research and Training Center on Family Support and Children's Mental Health
"Data Trends" reports present summaries of research on mental health services for children and adolescents and their families. The article summarized in this "Data Trends" describes how an organizational and community intervention model (ARC: Availability, Responsiveness, Continuity) can be used in conjunction with the implementation of one evidence-based treatment (Multisystemic Therapy, MST). Of the eight rural Appalachian counties in East Tennessee participating in the implementation of MST, four were randomly selected to also participate in ARC, a model of change developed at the Children's Mental Health Services Research Center in Tennessee, and previously tested in the context of a child welfare and juvenile justice system. The authors discuss the theoretical bases of the model, contextual factors for this change project, intervention strategies and the change process, and approaches to the collection of evaluation data. Rural communities face particular challenges in improving children's mental health services. Evidence derived from research on selected populations may not be transferable to other groups, especially if they are traditionally underrepresented in research studies. Models such as ARC offer an expanded framework to guide the research and evaluation of efforts to improve mental health services. Community participation in how problems are defined and addressed is a central part of the model, as is attention to contextual factors that may affect both implementation and outcomes of treatment. The results of this study should provide valuable information about effective implementation strategies in systems of care. [This "Data Trends" presents a summary of: Glisson, C. & Schoenwald, S. K.
