"Data Trends" reports present summaries of research on mental health services for children and adolescents and their families. The article summarized in this "Data Trends" addresses several gaps in previous research estimating the impact of caregiving on employment. For instance, prior studies employ a variety of disability definitions, making it hard to establish clear estimates of the true impact of disability on maternal employment. Additionally, research in the area is not conclusive regarding possible differences in the effect of caregiving on employment for single women who are the heads of household versus married women. This study utilized data from the Surveys of Income and Program Participation (SIPP), which accounted for changes to maternal employment over time. The survey used the most comprehensive definitions of child disability, and the sample was large enough to ensure that enough of the families sampled would include a child with a disability.
