Informational Text in K-3 Classrooms. Helping Children Read and Write
Kletzien, Sharon Benge; Dreher, Mariam Jean
International Reading Association (NJ3)
Although educational standards call for children to read information effectively, emphasis on using narrative texts with young readers persists in the early literacy community. This book shows that nonfiction texts can be as effective as narrative in early reading instruction, and offers suggestions for developing classroom libraries and choosing quality informational texts that you can use with all children. Real-life examples demonstrate the success of informational texts in a variety of classroom settings. The following chapters are included: (1) Information Text in the K-3 Classroom: Supporting Motivation and Achievement; (2) Including Informational Text in the Classroom Library; (3) Choosing Informational Books for the Classroom; (4) Using Informational Books for Read-Alouds; (5) Teaching Comprehension Strategy Using Informational Text; (6) Using Informational Text and Internet Resources to Teach Search Strategies; (7) Teaching Children to Write Informational Text; and (8) Putting It All Together. Appended are: (1) Resources for Teacher; (2) Forms for Teachers; and (3) Forms for Students. Acknowledgments, an index, references, and children's book references are also included.
