Help struggling readers understand content area texts with research-based, innovative classroom tools that foster lifelong reading comprehension habits. This book presents easy-to-use activities organized around six habits of reading comprehension: (1) Organizing text information by sculpting the main idea and summarizing; (2) Connecting to background knowledge; (3) Making inferences and predictions; (4) Generating and answering questions; (5) Understanding and remembering word meanings; and (6) Monitoring one's own comprehension. The activities include reproducible forms and variations to help English-language learners, struggling readers, and other students who need extra support. Additional resources in the appendixes will assist you in using the activities in the classroom. The books content is divided over three parts. The first part, Developing Instruction Using Comprehension Habits, has the following chapters: (1) A Crash Course in Reading Comprehension and (2) Assessment and Instruction That Builds Comprehension Habits. The second part, Developing Instruction Using Comprehension Habits, continues with the next chapters: (3) Organizing Text Information by Sculpting the Main Idea and Summarizing;(4) Connecting to Background Knowledge; (5) Making Inferences and Predictions; (6) Generating and Answering Questions; (7) Understanding and Remembering Word Meanings; and (8) Monitoring One's Own Comprehension. The third part, includes Reproducibles. The following are appended: (1) A Few Multiple-Meaning Words; and (2) Prefixes, Suffixes, and Roots. An index is provided.
