Whose IDEA Is This? A Resource Guide for Parents
Ohio Department of Education
This resource guide on the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) is designed to inform parents about the programs available to children with disabilities. The first section describes the necessary steps for getting services (i.e., prereferrals, referrals, evaluations, and Individualized Education Program (IEP) meetings. Another section provides answers to frequently asked questions on prereferrals, referrals, notices, surrogate parents, consent, evaluation, reevaluation, independent educational evaluation, individualized education program, extended school year services, transition, records, resolving disagreements, due process, how to resolve conflicts or concerns, nonpublic schools, and discipline. Appendices to this document include definitions of commonly used terms and disability conditions, as well as a sample "Request for an Impartial Due Process Hearing" form.
