Handheld computers, sometimes known as PDAs, have been available for purchase since the mid-1990s, as have their handheld relatives, the graphing calculators. It is only in the past few years, however, that these diminutive devices have made their way into K-12 schools in numbers significant enough to allow us to draw conclusions about their educational value. While statistics from Market Data Retrieval (MDR) show that fewer than 10 percent of schools had purchased handheld computers for educational purposes by 2004, the schools represented by this small but growing number of "early adopters" offer us insight into the potential of handheld technology in a K-12 setting.
