Leading for Learning: Reflective Tools for School and District Leaders. CTP Research Report.
Knapp, Michael S.; Copland, Michael A.; Talbert, Joan E.
The framework of reflective ideas and tools presented here, and in the companion, "Leading for Learning Sourcebook: Concepts and Examples," supports leaders' efforts to improve student learning in schools and districts. Overall, the framework sees to enable powerful, equitable learning for all students. Its ideas and tools highlight five areas of action for improvement and various routes for advancing student and professional learning, while building a system that connects and sustains these efforts. Used as a leaders' toolbox or dynamic organizer, the overall framework is designed primarily for school and district administrators who bear formal responsibility for improving student learning and are most able to bring influence and resources to support that goal. The ideas and suggestions are based on published and ongoing research combined with the craft knowledge of a wide range of practicing educators. The booklet includes: "A Call for Education Leadership"; "Hector's Challenge to School and District Leaders"; "Reflective Tools for Understanding and Action: How Leaders Influence Learning" (learning in context and leading for learning); "What Leading for Learning Means in Practice" (establishing a focus on learning, building professional communities that value learning, engaging external environments that matter for learning, acting strategically and sharing leadership, and creating coherence); and "Meeting Hector's Challenge."
