A Practical Guide to School Improvement: Meeting the Challenges of NCLB. ERS Report.
Protheroe, Nancy; Shellard, Elizabeth; Turner, Jennifer
This report highlights the research on how schools across the country have successfully transformed themselves into high-performing schools. It provides suggestions for how school leaders can use this knowledge base as they examine their schools' instructional and administrative practices. Chapter titles reflect the contents: (1) "Introduction"; (2) "High Expectations with Support as Needed"; (3) "Curriculum Alignment and Coherence"; (4) "Data-Based Decision Making"; (5) "Improving Teacher Skills through Teacher Evaluation"; (6) "Professional Development for Instructional Improvement"; (7) "A Caring School Community as a Support for Student Learning"; (8) "Family and Community Involvement"; (9) "Effective Leadership"; (10) "School Improvement: Understanding the Change Process"; and (11) "Developing an Action Plan." Although intentionally research based, the report is intended to act as a guide to action. Each chapter contains useful checklists, rubrics, action steps, and a space for readers to jot down notes, questions, or personal action items. Also included is a list of Web-based resources and 189 references. (WFA)
