Untangling Some Knots in K-8 Writing Instruction.
Peterson, Shelley, Ed.
This book brings together the perspectives of teachers, administrators, consultants, and researchers on teaching writing to create a bridge between theory and practice. The book's 11 chapters are organized into three sections that tackle some persistent knots of writing instruction and assessment. Under Section I-Students' and Teachers' Learning Processes-are the following chapters: (1) "Untangling Approaches to Teaching Writing: A Process of Change in One Classroom" (Pamela E. Van Nest); (2) "Untangling Knots through Talking about Writing" (Jeanne M. Arnold and Shelley Peterson); (3) "Multiage Author Groups: One Way to Untangle the Revision Knot" (Cathy Bruce); (4) "Untangling Knots in Early Writing: Young Children's Conceptions of Print" (Janette Pelletier and Jennifer Lasenby). Under Section II-Diversity and Teaching Writing-are these chapters: (5) "A Complex Tangle: Teaching Writing to English Language Learners in the Mainstream Classroom" (Monika Smith and Donald S. Qi); (6) "Untangling Second Language Writers' and Teachers' Knots with Reformulation" (Sharon Lapkin); (7) "A Tightly Tangled Knot: The Influence of Teachers' Gender Perceptions on Their Assessment of Student Writing" (Shelley Peterson). Under Section III-Teaching Writing Using Multimedia and the Arts-are these chapters: (8) "Untying the Knot of Time Constraints: Using Technology to Extend Student Writing beyond the Classroom" (Joseph Allin); (9) "Unraveling the Fear of Poetry/Reveling in the Pleasure of Poetry" (Carl Leggo); (10) "The Tangle of Context: Making Meaning by Writing in Role" (David Booth); (11) "Engaging Reluctant Adolescent Writers with Contemporary Literacy: Untangling Two Knots" (Jill Kedersha McClay); and "Conclusions: Two Ways to Look at Knots" (Shelley Peterson).
