Physicians and Counselors Collaborate on Men's Avoidance of Mental Health Counseling Services: A Preliminary Study.
Smith, Jeffrey Maurice
Limited literature exists describing the melding of philosophies aimed at increasing men's use of mental health counseling services. Members of the mental health counseling profession will benefit from collaborating with other health care professional to conceptualize alternative means to encourage men to use mental health counseling services. This phenomenological-heuristic hybrid study brought four male health care providers together to discuss their experiences and viewpoints on men's avoidance of mental health care counseling services. A focus group discussion produced a series of recurring themes and a possible strategy for interdisciplinary practice. Pairing physical and mental health check-ups that emphasize health and wellness versus pathology will be the interdisciplinary practice highlighted. (Contains 12 references.) (Author)
