This book provides information for elementary and secondary teachers about autism and classroom techniques for teaching students with autism in inclusive classrooms. The text consists of 12 chapters, each concerned with a different school issue/structure. Chapter 1 outlines definitions of autism and attempts to illustrate how autism is experienced by individuals with the labels of autism, Asperger syndrome, and other related labels. Chapter 2 provides information on inclusive education and outlines the federal laws related to special education. Chapter 3 explores some of the values and beliefs that support the development of inclusive schools. The following chapter features voices of families and gives ideas for partnering with parents. Chapters 5 and 6 share specific strategies for creating a positive, safe, and comfortable educational environment, and ideas for building classroom community. Chapter 7 illustrates different ways that student communication can be bolstered, and chapter 8 explores ways that educators can promote literacy development. Positive ways to support a range of behaviors are provided throughout chapter 9 and chapter 10 contains tools and structures to assist in lesson planning.
