This report presents and analyzes data on charter schools in Colorado from the 2001-02 school year. During the 2001-02 school year, 86 charter schools operated in Colorado and served 24,658 students. This descriptive evaluation rests on a review of student and school data regularly maintained by the Colorado Department of Education and individual charter schools. The evaluation did not involve site visits to schools nor require supplemental data collection by schools. Appended are a copy of the request form used for collecting data and a special supplemental questionnaire for charter high schools. The report includes the following information: (1) the characteristics of charter schools and their students, teachers, and administrators; (2) student achievement and school performance in charter schools; (3) the governance and administration of charter schools; (4) waivers of state law granted to charter schools; (5) charter school renewals and closures; (6) selected operational issues in charter schools; and (7) issues affecting the growing cohort of charter high schools in Colorado.
