These guidelines were developed to help school and early intervention personnel and families understand the nature and benefits of assistive technology and how to use current best practices to provide assistive technology to children with disabilities. Information is provided in a simple question and answer format on the following topics: (1) Federal definitions and legislation related to the provision of assistive technology; (2) related terminology; (3) the assistive technology evaluation process; (4) assistive technology in the Individualized Family Support Plan (IFSP) and the Individualized Education Program (IEP), (5) assistive technology in the school; (6) funding and ownership of assistive technology; and (7) parental rights.
