Motivation in Foreign/Second Language Learning: Some Problems and Implications.
Song, Sung-Hyun
By reviewing the recent studies on motivation in language learning, this paper attempts to recognize what has been done in the area of research on foreign and second language (L2) learning motivation in the late 1980s and 1990s and to discuss some problems and issues found in those studies in relation to the construct "motivation" in language learning, particularly the lack of a more comprehensive and complete theory of L2 learning motivation. New research topics are provided for further study with reference to L2 learning motivation. Some features of motivation that pose a challenge to the motivation researcher are presented. Issues to be addressed in future studies are put forward, and the use of more diverse research methodologies are suggested for a more comprehensive model of L2 learning motivation.
