Doherty, Gillian
Partners in Quality is a research and development project sponsored by the Canadian Child Care Federation and its affiliates to explore how child care providers, parents, and other partners can work together to support and improve quality in child care. This booklet, in both English and French, supplements a series to support child care providers and to enhance the dialogue within communities on the importance of quality child care environments. The booklet is designed to be used for two workshops within the Partners in Quality series, the first introducing the standards of practice and code of ethics for child care practitioners, and the second introducing the guide on self-reflection for child care practitioners. Following an introduction, the booklet is organized into four parts. Part 1, "Standards of Practice," provides a rationale for implementing standards of practice, describes the basis of the standards, and delineates the settings in which the standards apply. This part then presents standards of practice related to caring for children, partnerships with children's families, partnerships with colleagues and other community services, professionalism, and operation of a family child care home. Part 2, "Code of Ethics," presents eight principles from the code of ethics of the Canadian Child Care Federation. Part 3, "Guide to Self-Reflection for Practitioners in Child Care Settings," offers a tool to help caregivers think about their current practice and reflect upon possible changes. The instrument has 17 sections based on the standards of practice. Part 4 then lists 66 print resources, 5 self-study programs, 6 resource kits, 9 videotapes or videotape kits, 1 program, and 22 national/provincial organizations or associations. The standards section contains 19 references and 8 endnotes. (KB)
