A Call to Action: What Schools Can Do To Prevent Teen Pregnancy and Promote Student Achievement.
National School Boards Association, Alexandria, VA. Council of Urban Boards of Education.
This report presents highlights of a 1998 forum that examined why teen pregnancy is an education priority, the impact of teen pregnancy on student success in school, promising school approaches to teen pregnancy prevention, and what help schools need to become more effective partners in preventing teen pregnancy. Recommendations by forum participants are presented in the areas of developing cognitive and creative competencies (e.g., set high standards for all students and align curriculum frameworks and assessments); developing career and vocational competencies; developing health and physical competencies (e.g., incorporate comprehensive health education into state and local standards and assessments); developing personal and social competence (e.g., promote family and community involvement and incorporate standards for character education as part of the school curriculum and environment); and developing citizenship competencies (providing civics education and service learning experiences). Cross-cutting recommendations include developing a shared vision for education at the state and district levels and supporting promising, evidence-based policies and programs.
