Research Connections Canada: Supporting Children and Families, Number 1.
Sullivan, Susan, Ed.; Bose, Kathy, Ed.; Levesque, Lise, Ed.
Serving as a vehicle for raising the profile of and thereby gaining recognition for the important research and development work being conducted in Canada in support of children and families, the "Research Connections Canada" series compiles research and/or development papers as well as background papers, analytical literature reviews, and essays. This issue of the series focuses on early childhood programs. The papers are as follows: (1) "Elements of Quality" (Gillian Doherty), on the influence of structural and contextual elements and process quality in early childhood classrooms; (2) "Multiple Stakeholders: Multiple Perspectives" (Gillian Doherty), on understanding and ensuring that quality involves a continuous process of reconciling the perspectives of different stakeholders within a broader context of universal values; (3) "Quality Child Care and Community Development: What Is the Connection?" (Allison Benner), addressing the conflict between professionally driven concepts of quality child care and community-oriented conceptions of quality care; (4) "Community Development: Models of Engagement and Evaluation" (Allison Benner), noting the trend toward decreased public sector responsibility, the precarious place of child care in this fiscal climate, and models of community engagement and evaluation currently underway to meet these challenges; and (5) "Troubled Relationships in Early Childhood Education: Parent-Teacher Interactions in Ethnoculturally Diverse Child Care Settings" (Judith K. Bernhard, Marie Louise Lefebvre, Kenise Murphy Kilbride, Gyda Chud, and Rika Lange), detailing a study of the views of early childhood professionals and minority/immigrant parents concerning parent involvement, goals, parenting, and incidents of discrimination. Each of the papers contains references. (HTH)
