How Schools Work & How To Work with Schools: A Primer for Professionals Who Serve Children and Youth.
Bodgen, James F.
People increasingly recognize that health and education are intertwined. Education goals cannot be achieved without attention to health; health goals cannot be achieved without attention to education. This primer is a guide for professionals in the health and social-services sectors. Its purpose is to bridge professional cultures and languages and help practitioners find their way through the complex education system. Its underlying theme is that only by working together can health and education professionals effectively support the healthy growth and development of all children and youth. The guide describes how the education system works, how to identify leverage points for action, how to build positive working relationships with educators, and how to overcome challenges of working together on common goals. The guide also offers an eight-component model of a school-health program: (1) healthy school environment; (2) comprehensive school health education; (3) school health services; (4) school nutrition services; (5) counseling, psychological, and social services; (6) physical education; (7) health promotion for school personnel; and (8) family and community involvement in school health. The guide contains numerous resources, 8 charts, and 64 endnotes, some of which include references. (WFA)
