This report documents and summarizes research findings on the influence of religion on the lives of U.S. adolescents. It examines recent academic research on religious influences during adolescence and reports findings from quality studies, published mostly in academic journal articles or book chapters. The report focuses on: "Levels of Adolescent Religious Behavior (religious involvement); "Physical and Emotional Health"; "Educational Aspirations and Achievement"; "Moral Development"; "Gender Role Development"; "Volunteerism and Political Involvement"; "Delinquency" (alcohol, tobacco, and drug use and sex behavior); "Parenting and Family Relationships" (family well-being and parenting practices); "Theorizing the Influence of Religion during Adolescence"; and "A Developmental and Cultural Approach to the Study of Religious Influence." The report concludes that an adequate account of religion during adolescence requires attention to intergenerational social bonds, changing family structures, valued practices and groups, community norms and proscriptions, and transactional relationships between parents, children, and peers.
