From Home to School Level 2: Stories and Activities for Parents. Teacher's Guide [and Student Book and] Workbook [with] Audiotape and Audio CD.
Gianola, Ann
This document is comprised of Level 2 of a multimedia parent series focusing on issues of importance to parents of elementary-school age children and offering opportunities for discussion, critical thinking, and problem solving. The program is geared to adult learners in family literacy programs, adult basic education, or English as a second language (ESL) programs. There are four parts to the program: (1) a student book; (2) a student workbook; (3) a teachers guide; and (4) an audio recording (audiotape and compact disk formats). The student book is intended for both native speakers with limited reading skills and English-language learners with a mid- to high-beginning level. Fifteen stories in each student book presenting situations familiar to parents serve as the foundation for lesson material, with lesson themes the same at each level to allow greater flexibility in the multilevel classroom. The lesson themes relate to: (1) morning routines; (2) health, transmission of head lice, and parent notification; (3) nationality, socializing at school, and making friends; (4) school lunches and following cafeteria rules; (5) parent-teacher communication and an extended absence; (6) volunteering at school and field trips; (7) report cards; (8) after-school child care; (9) emotions and reporting unpleasant incidents to the school; (10) homework and parental support; (11) popularity and classroom behavior; (12) friendship and family rules; (13) school dress codes; (14) playground safety; and (15) unexcused school absences. Each lesson in the student book includes exercises to check comprehension, expand vocabulary, and strengthen listening, speaking, and writing skills. The accompanying workbook, focusing on language skills, is intended primarily for ESL learners but may be suitable for others. The audio recording provides a reading of each story, the dialogs for each lesson, and prompts for all listening activities, including the workbook listening activities. The teachers guide provides an overview of the program, makes suggestions for using the program effectively, and includes notes for each lesson; these notes contain a preview section listing the main themes of the story and suggested warm-up activities, as well as suggestions for enlarging the activities in the student book.
