Viajando por la Carretera de la Educacion Especial: Una Guia para los Padres para Tener un Viaje Feliz y Seguro (Traveling the Special Education Highway: A Parent's Guide to a Safe and Happy Journey).
Santa Maria, Karen
Designed for Spanish-speaking parents, this brochure, written in Spanish, uses a car-trip analogy to describe special education services for students with disabilities. It addresses: (1) child find; (2) initial evaluation and eligibility determination; (3) categories of students who receive special education services and related services; (4) creating a home file to organize materials; (5) parent participation in multidisciplinary evaluation team meetings and recommended behaviors; (6) the purpose and the development of an Individualized Education Program (IEP); (7) initial student placement; (8) requirement that the student be placed in the least restrictive environment to receive appropriate services; (9) review and revision of the IEP; (10) revaluation and determination of eligibility; (11) procedural safeguards and parental notice of rights; (12) exiting the special education highway; (13) mediation and due process hearing when parties disagree; and (14) tips for dealing with hitting a "traffic jam" along the special education route. The brochure closes with a list of special education resource contacts in Arizona. (CR)
