Nurturing Responsible Behavior: A Foundation for Guidance. Preventing Discipline Problems, Unit 3. [Teaching Video, Practice Video, Facilitator's Guide, and Viewer's Guide].
As children learn to practice responsible behaviors, discipline problems in the early childhood classroom can be reduced. As Part 3 of a 3-part video series designed to help adults working with 3- to 8-year-olds use a proactive approach to prevent discipline problems, this video training package is comprised of a Facilitators' Guide, a Viewers' Guide, and two accompanying videotapes. The focus of this third part of the series is to nurture responsible behavior among children so they can assume control of their own behaviors. The Facilitators' Guide summarizes the teaching videotape and presents suggested workshop exercises and group discussion activities. Instructions for each exercise include tips for the group facilitator and suggestions for extending the exercise. The Viewers' Guide provides a summary for the program and includes handouts for the workshop exercises. The 27-minute teaching videotape features footage from a Head Start classroom and a mixed-grade 1-3 classroom to illustrate how shifting responsibility to children can give children opportunities to develop critical skills. The teaching video also presents a 3-step process for shifting responsibility, involving leading with a question that asks the child to identify a solution to the problem, allowing children time to think about solutions before offering adult help, and using a variety of techniques to support childrens responsible behavior. The 27-minute practice videotape presents 3 exercises designed to help viewers become aware of opportunities to shift responsibility, review and practice various support techniques that help children take on responsibility, and recognize how ones experiences with responsibility influence ones' actions and attitudes toward shifting responsibility to children.
