Women as School Executives: The Complete Picture.
Pankake, Anita, Ed.; Schroth, Gwen, Ed.; Funk, Carole, Ed.
This work offers stories and poems from women school executives who rely on inner and external spiritual guides in their careers, and offers insight about the effective use of mentoring. Section 1, "The Professional Self," includes 14 narratives about the experiences of women superintendents, leadership metaphors, gender differences in leadership styles, balancing accountability and control, school reforms, and guidance for women leaders. Section 2, "The Educated Self," offers the experiences of women in higher education and includes six book reviews. Section 3, "The Strong Self," addresses such issues as professional adversity, self-confidence, the experiences of rural school administrators, and the barriers to entering administration. Section 4, "The Family Self," examines the role of family and relationships in the lives of professional women. Section 5, "The Giving Self," includes poems and narratives about the characteristics of female leadership and mentoring styles, overcoming sabotage and opposition from other women, coping strategies, and offering to mentor. Section 6, "The Spiritual and Emotional Self," explores the important role of spirituality in the lives of women professionals. It shares the experiences of women who enable success among others, use spirituality in their leadership approach, understand the importance of retreat and rejuvenation, and establish a valuable relationship with God. Section 7, "The Reflecting Self," shares the narratives of women to investigate such issues as rights of passages, professional relationships with other women, enjoying nonprofessional life, searching for meaning, predicting success, making choices, and discerning the essence of leadership.
