Learner-Centered Teaching: Five Key Changes to Practice. The Jossey-Bass Higher and Adult Education Series.
Weimer, Maryellen
This book focuses on learner-centered instruction in college and university classrooms, presenting the meaning, practice, and ramifications of this approach and explaining how it transforms the college classroom environment. The book shows how to tie teaching and curriculum to the process and objectives of learning rather than to the content delivery alone. It identifies how to put in place learner-centered policies and practices, provides a theoretical foundation for the learner-centered approach, and outlines a positive way to improve teaching. The book includes nine chapters in two parts. Chapter (1) "Lessons on Learning," is followed by Part 1, "What Changes When Teaching is Learner-Centered?" This part includes: (2) "The Balance of Power," (3) "The Function of Content," (4)"The Role of the Teacher," (5) "The Responsibility for Learning," and (6) "The Purpose and Processes of Evaluation." Part 2, "Implementing the Learner-Centered Approach," includes: (7) "Responding to Resistance," (8) "Taking a Developmental Approach," and (9) "Making Learner-Centered Teaching Work." Three appendixes offer a syllabus and learning log, handouts that develop learning skills, and reading lists. (Contains approximately 180 references.) (SM)
