Virginia Commonwealth Univ., Richmond. Center for Public Affairs.
This document contains the full results of a public-opinion survey of Virginia residents on education issues. The survey was conducted by telephone, using a randomly selected sample of adults. The sample for this poll was 804 respondents, which represents a cooperation rate of 49 percent. Respondents answered questions on the following topics: (1) overall evaluation of schools; (2) standards of learning and standards-of-learning tests; (3) school funding; (4) school vouchers; and (5) school leadership and school performance. This statistical report contains the questions asked in the survey, along with the responses, and a table of the results organized by demographic subgroupings. Some highlights of the poll: (1) 60 percent of respondents said public schools in Virginia provide an excellent or good education; (2) 30 percent said public schools in their community have gotten better since the previous year; (3) 44 percent said standards of learning in Virginia schools have not helped improve the quality of schools; (4) 67 percent said the level of funding in Virginia public schools is not enough to meet the schools' needs; and (5) 57 percent of respondents oppose school vouchers.
