In 2000, the National TRIO Clearinghouse embarked on a study of the extent of access to computer-based technology of TRIO Talent Search (TS) students and the role TS projects play in providing access. Responses from all TRIO programs show that the access of TS students to technology is limited. Only 66% of TS students have access to computers and the Internet in their schools, and only 9% of the classrooms in their schools have access to computers and the Internet. Fifty-five percent of TRIO TS projects do not have any desktop personal computers primarily designated for student academic use, and 30% of projects serving more than 1,000 students have only 1 to 3 computers for the 1,000 students to use. The majority (58%) of TRIO Talent Search projects do not provide access to the Internet for their students, and 81% do not provide access to e-mail for their students. The technology needs of TRIO TS projects are great. The TS technology report provides specific recommendations for each project. (Contains 4 tables and 11 references.) (SLD)
