Theme Kits Made Easy.
Eslinger, Leslie Silk
Recognizing the long-lasting impact of young childrens learning through themes as well as the amount of teacher time spent in preparing for this type of teaching, this kit is designed to help teachers avoid the shortcomings of theme-based teaching, while capitalizing on the benefits of this approach. The book is presented in two sections. The first section discusses the use of theme kits. Chapter 1, Theme Kit Basics, presents a rationale for using theme kits, presents factors to consider when selecting themes, delineates possible themes, and presents a plan for developing a theme kit. Chapter 2, Theme Kits in Use, describes how to use the kits effectively in the home or classroom program, focusing on the classroom environment and family involvement. Chapter 3, Theme Kit Guidelines, describes the components of the theme kits in this book and makes suggestions for evaluating kits. The second section of the book contains nine theme kits: (1) Goldilocks and the Three Bears; (2) Little Red Riding Hood; (3) Farm; (4) Caps for Sale; (5) The Three Billy Goats Gruff; (6) Buttons; (7) Babies; (8) Naptime; and (9) Family. Each kit includes an introduction, a theme tree showing ideas and questions related to the theme, a list of the kit contents, ways to involve families, suggestions for incorporating the theme into daily routines and interest areas, as well as activity ideas, and resources. The book's two appendices contain a blank theme tree and a list of catalogs, products, and web sites. Chapters 1 through 3 list additional resources. (KB)
