Over the last decade, policymakers, practitioners, and funders in the youth development field have become increasingly reliant on social indicators as tools to identify areas of need, to target resources, to set and monitor progress toward measurable goals, and to assess policy and program effectiveness. This report to the William T. Grant Foundation provides an overview of the youth social indicators field, including its dimensions, accomplishments, and major opportunities for development in the coming decade, with particular attention to those opportunities that seem to fit most closely with the goals of the Foundation. Following introductory remarks on the nature and uses of social indicators, the report describes the current status of and key opportunities for the youth indicators field in four major areas: (1) research and measurement; (2) data development; (3) dissemination/data availability; and (4) using indicators in training and technical assistance. The report concludes by identifying the greatest opportunities for the Grant Foundation, given the Foundation's core interests.
