This Congressional report contains the remarks made at a special meeting of the United States Committee on Aging to celebrate senior citizen's service to their community and examine policies regarding federally funded senior service programs. The following are among the programs, agencies, and organizations represented: Senior Companion Program; Catholic Charities; Foster Grandparents Program; Retired and Seniors Volunteer Program; South Central Indiana Interfaith Community Council; Big Brothers Program; Corporation for National Service; National Senior Service Corps; Civic Ventures; American Association of Retired Persons; and Purdue University. A large part of the testimony focused on senior citizens' service in areas such as mentoring, literacy education, and companionship and assistance to help other senior citizens remain at home. Extensive attention was also paid to the need for and possibility of additional government funding for the following activities: (1) expansion of existing senior service programs that have proved effective; (2) establishment of financial incentives to increase volunteering by senior citizens; (3) provision of additional training for seniors in areas such as physical and mental health, nutrition, child psychology, identifying signs of child abuse, and provision of long-term care and educational services; and (4) additional research on senior service programs.
