This document provides an overview of UNICEF's medium-term strategic plan for the period 2002-2005. Five priorities are detailed to which UNICEF has committed resources: (1) girls' education, completion of a quality primary school education for every girl and boy; (2) early intervention, promotion of integrated early childhood development to ensure the best possible start; (3) immunizations to safeguard children against disease and disability; (4) fighting HIV/AIDS and ensuring proper care for children and youth already affected; and (5) protection of every child so that all can grow up free from violence, exploitation, abuse, and discrimination. The report maintains that this organizing framework will enable UNICEF to help build "A World Fit for Children" and contribute to achieving the global goals of the United Nations Millennium Summit Declaration and other international agreements. The report also emphasizes that UNICEF's actions will continue to be guided by the Convention on the Rights of the Child and other international standards for protecting children's rights. Following a discussion of the context of the plan development and an assertion of UNICEF's belief in women's rights, the report delineates reasons for selection of the five priorities, discusses contributors to success in achieving the goals, and details what needs to be done in order to achieve the desired results by 2005.
