Distributed Open and Distance Learning: How Does E-Learning Fit? LSDA Reports.
Fletcher, Mick
The distinctions between types of open and distance learning broadly equate to the concept of learning at a time, place, and pace that best suits the learner. Distance learning refers to geography, whereas open learning refers to time. Flexible learning is a generic term referring either to geography or time. Combining these distinctions allows for 10 different types of distributed open and distance learning. E-learning can be embedded in all forms of flexible learning as well as in "inflexible" learning methods. Some models of e-learning are as follows: (1) accessing electronic learning centers in conventional timetabled class settings; (2) timetabled distance learning, including structured and timed e-mail discussions; (3) the "book-in" model of e-learning, wherein learners book sessions; (4) the "book of tickets" model of e-learning, which entitles learners to a specified number of hours of support that can be accessed whenever the learner wants; (5) the "drop-in" model of e-learning, which allows learners to access a workshop whenever desired and as often as necessary; (6) the "clinic" model of e-learning, which provides learners with a series of planned telephone tutorials; (7) the "flexistudy" model, which is based on asynchronous communication via e-mail; and (8) the "helpline" model, which is the distance form of the drop-in model.
