Curriculum 2000 was developed to give learners in England an opportunity to engage in a post-16 education experience providing both depth and flexibility. In its second year of existence, Curriculum 2000 was evaluated in a study involving more than 50 schools, sixth form colleges, and general further education colleges across England. Participating organizations were asked to provide a case study in 1 of 10 areas. The case studies documented the success that Curriculum 2000 enabled schools and colleges to achieve in the following areas: (1) provision of breadth through the curriculum (breadth through partnership, vocational qualifications other than vocational A-levels, enrichment, and information and computer technology); (2) tutoring (using tutoring to boost student motivation and achievement); (3) development of curriculum packages (planning the curriculum packages to include additional vocational qualifications, using additional qualifications to meet industry needs); (4) whole-institutional approaches (funding and resource distribution, conditions of service and staff contacts, examination and assessment policies and procedures); (5) use of information learning technology (setting up a strategic planning group, identifying required resources); (6) partnership arrangements (enhancing teaching and learning, building networks); and (7) progression (from Key stage 4, within Curriculum 2000).
