This guide presents tools for persuading parents to advocate for increased compensation for their child's care teacher/provider in order to break the link between what parents pay for child care and what providers earn, to advocate for a greater public investment in child care, and to improve the work environment for child care providers. The guide maintains that by working together, providers and parents can create better quality child care and better jobs for child care teachers and providers. Included in this guide is a checklist of actions parents can take in general and in connection with the Worthy Wage Campaign. The guide delineates ways to respond to children's concerns when their care provider leaves. Successful fund raising strategies are then described, including creating an "ad book," holding raffles, conducting a bowl-a-thon, and organizing a direct donor campaign. Suggestions are offered for building coalitions within the community to advocate for child care teachers/providers. The guide incorporates ways to engage the creative spirit to build momentum for the worthy wage movement, including examples of stories and songs and a job shadowing activity to demonstrate the work environment in child care to community leaders. Talking points of policy advocates are also presented. The guide concludes with a "to do" list for parents to make a commitment to the Worthy Wage Campaign and increase their own professionalism, advocacy, and leadership skills. (KB)
