This study, the first of its kind, examines the ability of the California Community College System to provide its students and faculty with Library and Learning Resources Programs and Services that are sufficient in quality, depth, and diversity to support each college's educational programs. The study covers a 7-year period from 1988-1989 through 1994-1995. The core organizational structures of the library and learning resources programs in the college system include the library, media centers (90%), learning assistance centers (56%), and computer centers (49%). The data included in the report is a compilation from 87 (83% of college system) participating colleges. Highlights of the report follow. Hours of access ranged from 51 to 77.5 hours per week, with an average of 63.81 hours. Weekend hours were limited to 4 to 10 hours per day, and often coincided with exam periods. Responding colleges requested interlibrary loans totaling 29,744 items, 34.74% of which were filled by community colleges. The colleges received 25,011 requests for items to be lent; 42% of the items were requested from within the system, and 53.92% were from outside of the California higher education community. In fiscal year 1996-97, library and media facilities were used by 18,916,471 persons, and the college system provided direct service to 12,778 persons from the community at large. (NB)
