Teaching for the Prevention of Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD): Grades 1-12. A Resource for Teachers of Health and Life Skills, and Career and Life Management.
Alberta Learning, Edmonton.
This resource supports a comprehensive school health approach to preventing fetal alcohol spectrum disorder, addressing various aspects of the health and life skills and the career and life management programs of study through an approach that focuses on the development of a healthy self-concept and healthy relationships as fundamental to prevention. It offers strategies and activities that emphasize the prevention of alcohol use and abuse during pregnancy and raise awareness of the effects and characteristics of fetal alcohol spectrum disorder. The resource also provides links to agencies and organizations working to prevent fetal alcohol spectrum disorder. Three themes are emphasized: understanding relationships, dealing with feelings, and managing risk and making personal choices. Each theme provides experiential activities that reinforce curricular concepts, skills, and attitudes and broaden students' understanding of fetal alcohol spectrum disorder prevention and its relationship to healthy choices. There are student activity photocopy masters within each theme. The resource contains: activities based on the health and life skills program of studies and the career and life management program of studies for each grade; experiential activities reinforcing curricular themes; student resources; and assessment strategies.
