Science and Native American Communities: Legacies of Pain, Visions of Promise.
James, Keith, Ed.
The chapters in this volume are based on papers presented at Colorado State University, in June 1997, at a conference on finding ways to integrate American Indian community goals, needs, and traditions with mainstream science and science education. The book's core message is that two extreme opinions, are present in society--that science has nothing of value to offer Indian people and that Indian cultures have nothing to offer science--are, though held by different groups, both wrong. Five sections cover education; culture; economic and community development; the land, the people, and science; and science and self-governance. The 24 chapters are: "Fires Need Fuel: Merging Science Education with American Indian Community Needs" (Keith James); "Education and American Indian Communities: A History of Pain, a Future of Promise?" (Keith James); "Indigenous Consciousness, Education, and Science: Issues of Perception and Language" (Cornel Pewewardy); "A Personal Journey into Science, Feminist Science, and Aboriginal Science" (Lillian Dyck); "How To Get What Indian Communities Need from Science" (Clifton Poodry); "The Native American Honor Society: Challenging Indian Students To Achieve" (Frank Dukepoo); "Culture: The Spirit beneath the Surface" (Keith James); "Tradition and Education: The World Made Seamless Again" (Oscar Kawageley); "Rebuilding Languages To Revitalize Communities and Cultures" (Ofelia Zepeda); "Trodding the Circle from Indian Community to University Research and Back" (Gilbert John); "Building Futures Together" (Keith James); "Education as a Tool for American Indian Community Development: Needs and Strategies" (James Lujan); "Managing Tribal Assets: Developing Long-Term Strategic Plans" (Dean Howard Smith, Joseph S. Anderson); "On the Front Lines of Indian Health: Practical and Political Issues in Providing Community Health Care" (Gerri Shangreaux); "Innovative Strategies for Promoting Development in Indian Communities" (Ron Jamieson); "Sons of the Sun, Daughters of the Earth" (Keith James); "Water and Water Quality Issues in and for American Indian Communities" (Freda Porter-Locklear); "Land, People, and Culture: Using Geographic Information Systems To Build Community Capacity" (Jhon Goes in Center); "The Three Sisters: Care for the Land and the People" (Jane Mt. Pleasant); "Science and Self-Governance: Power, Practice, and Politics" (Keith James); "Rebuilding Tradition To Create Workable Modern Systems and Practices for Indian Communities" (Reggie Crowshoe); "The Value of Scientific and Engineering Training for Indian Communities" (George Thomas); "Land, Science, and Indigenous Science: Tales from a Modern Treaty Negotiation Process" (Cliff Atleo); and "Conclusions: Closing the Circuit" (Keith James).
