This introductory packet provides an introduction to recent efforts to synthesize fundamental social and interpersonal areas of competence and problem functioning, while framing the discussion within the classification scheme developed by the American Pediatric Association. The range of interventions discussed is consistent with that framework, emphasizing the importance of accommodations as well as strategies to change the individual. The packet is divided into six sections. Section 1 highlights the classification of social and interpersonal problems. Sections 2 and 3 provide a discussion of the broad continuum of social and interpersonal problems and a quick overview of some basic resources. Section 4 presents interventions for social and interpersonal problems, including accommodations to reduce problems, behavior management, and empirically supported treatments. Section 5 presents additional resource aids. Section 6 contains a discussion on keeping social and interpersonal problems in broad perspective.
