National Training Curriculum for Educators of Youth in Confinement.
Brooks, Carol Cramer; White, Carter
This curriculum is the product of a project between the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP) and the National Juvenile Detention Association to develop and implement a 40-hour, core training curriculum for line staff in education programs in juvenile confinement and custody facilities. The curriculum is primarily intended for the pre-service training of teachers new to juvenile confinement education programs. The curriculum, prepared and tested by experienced educators in detention and correctional education, provides a sequence of modules focusing on the essentials of confinement education, while providing abundant practice through role play, exercises, and journal writing to apply the materials individually. It provides information on the juvenile justice system and the characteristics of juvenile offenders. It assists new educators in confinement facilities in developing assessments and curriculums that meet the specific needs of their students and are in compliance with existing national standards. It provides pointers and practice in teaching for better behavior management as well as for the development of specific skills. It introduces the teachers role in developing students social skills and assisting students as they make their transition into and out of the confinement facility. Finally, this curriculum provides suggestions for programs and classroom evaluation as a gauge of effectiveness and a basis for improvement. Appended is information about the authors, OJJDP, and the Center. (GCP)
