The Virtual Teacher Training Center: A One-Year Program To Transform Subject-Matter Experts into Licensed Career and Technical Education Teachers.
Twomey, Sylvia M.
This paper proposes a Virtual Teacher Training Center (VTTC) as an effective and efficient short-term solution that can become an integral part of a long-term solution to a crisis in career and technical education (CTE) teacher availability. An introduction discusses the challenge and describes the VTTC's two major foundations, which are the following: (1) a flexible, dynamic re-configurable teacher education program of 27-33 credits that can be completed within 1 academic year and is designed to train persons with industry and field experience into educated and licensed CTE teachers; and (2) Internet technology to deliver the program to potential teachers in their homes and communities, while they continue engaging in practical experience and student teaching near their homes. A discussion addresses the functioning model at Oregon State University. For each course, detailed descriptions and content outlines are provided. Informative material reports that each course is 1 credit, representing 30-33 hours of work; includes 3-4 open-ended activities with threaded discussions; and culminates in a capstone activity, a synthesis of each student's activities in that course. Courses are grouped in these categories: students and learning (4 courses); curriculum, instruction, and assessment (4 courses); school, community, and professional cultures (4 courses); and improving practice (3 courses). These other components within the instructional site are outlined: extensive list of resources, tools for student self-evaluation, teacher evaluation of student, online grade book, open chatroom, and place for announcements. Suggestions for a virtual home-base site are made. (Contains 41 references.) (YLB)
