This synopsis presents the key findings from a multi-year evaluation of the Cities in Schools (CIS) program, a school-based intervention for at-risk youth. Cities in Schools, Inc. is a nonprofit corporation that provides training and technical assistance to promote replication of the CIS dropout prevention process in communities and schools. The CIS model integrates existing community services and resources and relocates them to the school site to achieve dropout reduction and to relieve associated problems. The model aims to bring together the often fragmented agencies that provide youth services to promote more effective services and interventions. An evaluation of the CIS program was conducted by sponsoring federal agencies, headed by the Office of Juvenile Justice Programs. Data from site visits, interviews with program administrators, and reviews of program documents were collected. Evaluators recommended that the CIS national organization emphasize training and technical assistance to bolster areas where weaknesses were identified and that better data be kept for accountability purposes. Other recommendations concerned the role of partnership agencies. (SLD)
