The School District Data Book (SDDB) is an information resource from the National Center of Education Statistics that contains social, economic, and administrative data for each of the 15,274 public school districts (local education agencies, or LEAs) in the United States. This paper addresses the information and capabilities of the SDDB that can be used to assist decision and policymakers from one school district in Meriden (Connecticut). The research uses that can be made of the SDDB profile reports and supplemental tables are explored. A study of 1990 census information about Meriden's educational reference grouping process, a process that allows comparison of seven district "reference groups," demonstrates the use of SDDB database capabilities and the analysis of its data through the Statistical Software Package for Social Studies. Meriden's example illustrates ways in which the SDDB can provide vital statistics to meet the needs of educational communities.
